A city in Essex County, Massachusetts, Lawrence sits on the bank of the Merrimack River. The city had a population of 76,377 as of the 2010 US Census. Europeans first started a settlement in 1655, with the future site of the city purchased by a consortium of local industrialists. It was developed after purchasing control of Peter’s Falls and Bodwell’s Falls along the Merrimack River.
