Located in Rockingham County, Salem, New Hampshire is a quaint historic town but also a commercial hub with tons of attractions. The town was originally founded as North Parish in the mid 1600s, and so is considered “the first town in New Hampshire.” Officially incorporated in the mid 1700s when the borders between the states of Massachusets and New Hampshire were drawn, the town was named Salem after the (now famous) town in MA. The old North Parish meetinghouse is now home to the Salem Historical Society, which preserves the area’s rich history and offers tours of historic sites.
Canobie Lake Park was founded in 1902 as a resort area serving area industrial workers, and remains valuable greenspace for residents today, where visitors can enjoy historic trolleys and natural beauty. A popular Salem attraction is America’s Stonehenge, a large outdoor park with hiking trails, an archeological site, amusement park, and alpaca farm. There are also many amusement parks in the area, including one at Canobie Lake Park, but also Untamed and Castaway Island. The Mall at Rockingham Park is another popular shopping spot because of lax New Hampshire sales tax laws.
