Located near Cambridge, Lowell is one of two traditional seats of Middlesex County with an estimated population of 110,997 in 2019. It is the fourth most populous city in Massachusetts, and it is part of the Boston metropolitan statistical area. First incorporated to serve as a mill town in 1826, Lowell was named for Francis Cabot Lowell, a local figure in the Industrial Revolution. Often considered the cradle and birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, Lowell has many textile mills, factories, and historical manufacturing sites. The city also took in many refugees during the Cambodian genocide, leading it to having America’s second largest Cambodian American population.
